The Iron Lady!

A still from the movie Chinnada Gombe

She was an iconic and flamboyant Actor, Writer, Leader, Dancer and Singer. She had developed a run – down state after the tyrannical rule of the opposition. She gave the poor and needy of the state a comfortable life. She was the boldest politician India had ever seen. You might be wondering who this person is. It is none other than the ‘Golden Maiden or the ‘Amma’ of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa!

Jayalalithaa Jayaraman was born in Melukote, Mandya district, in the then Mysore state [ now Karnataka]. Interestingly, her name is derived from the 2 villas her family owned, Jaya vilas and Lalitha vilas! Her father was a lawyer but he never worked and squandered most of the money they had acquired as he died when little Jaya was 2 years old! She and her Mother had moved to her parental grandfather’s house in Srirangam where he worked for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

When Jaya lived in Chennai, she trained in dancing. She was an accomplished classical dancer and trained in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniattam, Manipuri and Kathak. During her Arangetram at the Rasika Ranjani sabha, Film star Shivaji Ganesan said that she will be a great Film star in the future, and he chose his words well as she becomes a debutant in the movie ‘Chinnada Gombe’ in the Kannada film industry. Since then, she was celebrated as an Actor as she acted for the Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi and English Film Industry!

But things took a drastic change she came into politics. She was forced by film star and Chief Minister M.G Ramachandran, or M.G.R as he was known. M.G.R said that she should try Rajya Sabha because of her fluency in English. She eventually got nominated and elected for the Rajya Sabha as ADMK was allied with the Congress, and she retained her seat for 6 years!
A Singer on a mission!

Everything was going well in her political career until a terrible event occurred in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. When she was trying to raise an argument  in the Assembly, she was brutally attacked by  DMK MLAs in the presence of their leader, Chief Minister Karunanidhi in 1989. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was cursed for this type of behavior on a MLA. Why, this type of behavior would be condemned against any animal! But as a proverb says “ One good comes out of the most disastrous event.”  This time it was vengeance, she got the determination to be the CM.  Just  2 years after this incident, There she was taking her vows on becoming Chief Minister!
Namo Namo Mata!

Fast forward to the future, she becomes the first person after M.G.R to win 2 consecutive polls, with a huge margin of over 45% votes compared to their rivals, DMK. She had dazzled the world with amazing schemes like the Amma Salt, Amma Unavagam, Amma Medicals, Amma water and many more !

Her life was a fight and her fight ended on December 5th, 2016, shocking millions of people with their feverish prayers.

This Blog is a Tribute to J. Jayalalithaa, one of the greatest people India has ever produced.
